The Writing Process

When you write stories there is a process that you go through. This is called the Writing Process! There are five simple steps to complete this process.

1.  Pre-write

The first step to the writing process is Pre-writing. Pre-write means that you are coming up with an idea. Ideas for pre-writing are all around you! If can't think of any ideas you can use a writing prompt to get you started. Once you have an idea expand it on and make it a story. You can start free writing by writing down everything that comes to you head. Or, you can jot down ideas about your topic.

2.  Write

The second step to the writing process is Writing. This step is also known as a Rough Draft. During the writing stage use you ideas from pre-writing to start your first draft. While writing do not worry about conventions such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Its okay if the story doesn't flow properly or you get off topic. you may have to go through many drafts before you like your work. It might be helpful when writing to go to a quiet place with no distractions so that you can think clearly about what you are writing.

3. Revise

The third step to the writing process is Revising. Everyone needs to revise. Even talented writers. During the revising stage you will need to add to your writing. You can do this by thinking of things that the reader still might need to know. Also look for places where you could replace boring words for vivid words that make your story sound better. You will also need to rearrange words or phrases. You can do this by looking for places that do not flow properly.

4. Edit

The fourth step to the writing process is Editing. Always edit after revising. When editing, go through each line and make sure all of the words are as strong as possible. Look for words that you can cut to make the sentence stronger. Make sure that every thing is spelled correctly and has the right punctuation. Also, look to see that you are writing in all the same tense. Go over story many times to make sure there are no missed mistakes before going to the next step in the writing process.

5. Publish

The last step in the writing process is publishing. Make sure your work is in the correct format. Your final copy must be neat. Make sure the font style and color are easily readable. Do not turn in a ripped or crumpled paper unless asked to.

Once you have completed all of these steps you are ready to turn your writing piece into Ms. Tutuska. To do this, make sure you have completed these steps:

First, you must type your story and print it out on the computer. Make sure your name, the date, and your period number are on it. Then, put it into a plastic sheet protector. Next, place your rough draft behind your final copy. Finally, put your Student Publishing Checklist- which should have been completed while revising and editing your story- behind your rough draft so that when you turn the sheet protector over, the checklist will be facing towards you. Now you are ready to turn your paper in!
