Genres of Literature

There are many genres of literature. Some of them include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, mystery, play, and historical fiction. We hope you enjoy and learn a lot from our page!
Fiction- Fiction is a story that the author creates. The events in a fictional story haven't happened before. All the characters, events, and things they say have been created.
Examples: Harry Potter series, The Lightning Thief, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series
Non-fiction- Non-fiction is a story that has happened or is factual. This genre is usually educational.
Examples: Biography, textbook, and the encyclopedia
Poetry- There are many different types of poetry. Poetry can consist of rhyming, aliteration, or even a certain amount of syllables in a line. Visit the "Poetry Prototypes" page to learn more information about poetry.
Examples: limerick, haiku, and acrostic
Mystery- Mystery stories are suspenseful and are full of twists and turns (metaphorically speaking) that will keep you wondering. Mysteries are usually detective stories.
Examples: Sherlock Holmes, The Hardy Boys, and Nancy Drew
Play- A play is a story that is made to be acted out in front of an audience. A play includes dialogue, actors, and props.
Examples: Romeo & Juliet and Les Miserables
Historical fiction- Historical fiction is a story that is based on an actual event in history, but many characters, things they say, and other minor details are created by the author.
