There are eight parts of speech in our language. They are nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. Here are their definitions and some examples:

 

Noun

A word that represents a person, place, thing or idea.

Examples:

South Carolina, child, house, Boston, Fenway Park, 

park,computer, pencil, bear

  




Pronoun

A word that takes the place of a noun.

Examples:

I, they, their, ourselves, itself, your, my, nobody, who, which, her, we  

 





Adjective

A word that is used to describe any noun or pronoun. 

Examples:

blue, fuzzy, smooth, smelly, wet, rough, gross 

   


     

 

Verb 

A word that indicates any action. 

Examples:

play, run, think, study, smell, wait, be, drive, kick, read

    




Adverb

A word that is used to describe a verb.

Examples:

carefully, often, very, quite, too, rarely, never

                        




Conjunction

A word that is used to join words or groups of words.

Examples:

and, or, but, neither, because, while, since      

                   


        

  

Preposition

A word used indicating the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word.

Examples:

in, until, of, from, after, under, beyond, across

                               


        

   

Interjection

A single word used to express strong emotion.

Examples:

Wow! Ah! Oh! No!
